<image:caption>Skyview Los Alamos

Perched atop a five-acre hillside overlooking town, Skyview began life in 1959 as a classic mid-century motor lodge. Its bold yellow MOTEL sign became a landmark along Highway 101, though the property later fell into decline—locals even dubbed it the “Psycho Motel.” In 2016, we at Nomada Hotel Group purchased and restored Skyview, reviving its vintage spirit while elevating it into a design-driven boutique experience. Today, it blends nostalgic Americana with contemporary comfort. The on-site restaurant and bar, Norman, is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the motel’s darker past, serving elevated American fare and expertly crafted cocktails against sweeping vineyard views.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Breakfast – Bob’s Well Bread

Bob’s Well Bread helped define Los Alamos as a culinary destination. Bob Oswaks’ artisan loaves rival those of Parisian bakeries, and the daily line out the door is a testament to his devotion to his craft. Don’t miss the country toast with housemade jam—or anything from the pastry case. Lunch or Dinner – Bell’s Housed in the town’s former post office, this cozy, Michelin-starred French bistro is owned and operated by chef Daisy Ryan and her husband, Greg. With just ten tables and an open kitchen, Bell’s feels timeless—equal parts warm hospitality, impeccable wine list, and refined yet relaxed cuisine. It’s the standard we all aspire to in hospitality. Lunch or Dinner – Pico at the Los Alamos General Store Set inside the original 1880 general store, Pico honors the town’s history while championing a farm-to-table ethos. Everything—from charcuterie to condiments—is made in-house, using locally sourced vegetables, grains, and meats. Their carefully curated wine and spirits program focuses on small, sustainable producers. BBQ – Priedite Barbecue at Bodega A weekend pop-up worth planning around. Priedite serves smoked brisket, ribs, ranchero sausage, and pulled pork—all cooked low and slow over local oak—inside Bodega, a natural wine bar with a laid-back garden setting. Late Night – The Depot Bar Inside the town’s Antique Mall lies this unpretentious local watering hole—the only spot in town open past 10 p.m. Expect live music, billiards, shuffleboard, and a cast of locals who play as seriously as they drink. It’s the perfect counterpoint to the town’s otherwise refined energy. Shop A stroll down Bell Street reveals an array of vintage treasures and antique finds—records, books, décor, and garden curiosities abound. Eye of the Day, newly relocated from Carpinteria, is a standout. The shop specializes in European garden décor, including Italian terracotta urns, French Anduze pottery, and Greek planters, alongside statuary, fountains, and garden accessories that feel straight out of Provence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Caballos de Luz, Uruguay: Hospitality is Luxury - Caballos de Luz sits in the rural sierras of Rocha, far from the polish and prestige of José Ignacio. There is no formal check-in. No front desk. No scented towels. Just a woman on a stoop, a quiet gesture toward a hut, and the immediate understanding that my outfit was a miss. Inside the hut, two women sat at a dining table speaking Spanish. One of them was Lucie, the proprietor. Austrian, barefoot, dreadlocked, dressed in a frock that looked as though it had lived several lives before this one. She greeted me with kindness, and a flicker of concern. She walked me to my hut; a small, circular, thatched roof structure with a full-size bed on crates, a table and two chairs, a shelf, and a compact countertop with a propane stove and an Italian coffee maker. When it became clear I didn’t know how to use it, she showed me. She asked if I preferred tea. I mentioned my love of mint tea, but also my morning dependence on coffee. Then she led me to the outhouse: an eco-toilet; no flush, no septic, just sawdust. Two scoops per visit. Beside it, a shower and sink. Thoughtful, immaculate, and perfectly sufficient. Don’t let the Comme des Garçons fool you, I’m entirely comfortable with an outhouse, and this one was clearly designed with care.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Caballos de Luz, Uruguay: Hospitality is Luxury</image:title>
<image:caption>Ten minutes later, I had unpacked and was at the stable, ready for the day’s ride. After a few simple instructions from our guide about their philosophy of nonviolence toward horses and animals, we were riding. We moved through narrow, single-track trails and crossed rivers. We trotted. We cantered. There was no performative reassurance. No theatrics. Just trust between horse and rider, guide and terrain. This is what it feels like to be alive, I thought. And it made me wonder how my life only allows for this feeling 7000 miles from home. That evening, dinner was served under a large tree, by candlelight. A storm was approaching, and the power was intermittent. The cook handed each of us candles for our huts, just in case. The food was excellent; simple, nourishing, and made with love. Vegetarian, largely homegrown, entirely unpretentious. We ate communally. Without the distraction of Wi-Fi and cell service, we talked. We lingered. This, too, felt like luxury; not branding or thread count, but presence, attentiveness, and care.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WILLY GUHL: SCULPTURAL PLANTERS AND MODERNIST DESIGN - Who Was Willy Guhl?</image:title>
<image:caption>A Pioneer of SWISS Industrial Design, Born in 1915, Willy Guhl was a Swiss industrial designer, interior architect, and one of the leading voices of 20th-century neofunctionalism. Before becoming a designer, he trained as a cabinetmaker, an early influence that shaped his lifelong obsession with craftsmanship and material integrity. He later joined the Zurich School of Applied Arts, first as a student and eventually as a teacher, where he mentored a generation of designers and shaped the trajectory of Swiss design. Guhl’s early career coincided with Europe’s post-WWII reconstruction, a period defined by scarcity, practicality, and mass housing initiatives. Rather than create elitist design objects, he focused on simple, durable, accessible furniture for everyday life. His ethos: “Design should serve people, last for generations, and never be wasteful.” This philosophy continues to resonate in the sustainability-focused design landscape we champion today.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WILLY GUHL: SCULPTURAL PLANTERS AND MODERNIST DESIGN - The Material That Changed Everything: Eternit Fiber-Cement</image:title>
<image:caption>Guhl’s most important breakthrough came in 1951 when he partnered with Eternit AG, a Swiss company producing a new kind of fiber-cement; a blend of cement and fiber reinforcement that was strong, lightweight, and moldable. Why Eternit Was Revolutionary Weatherproof & durable, making it perfect for garden planters and outdoor furniture Flexible enough to form sculptural curves Fire-resistant and low maintenance A natural patina that improves with age Long lifespan, making it an early sustainable choice At a time when Eternit was used mostly for roofs and building panels, Guhl saw artistic possibility. This shift from industrial architecture to human-scaled design was groundbreaking.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When in Los Alamos - GREATEST HITs</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Skyview Los Alamos. The on-site restaurant and bar, Norman, is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the motel’s darker past, serving elevated American fare and expertly crafted cocktails against sweeping vineyard views. 2. Bell’s. Housed in the town’s former post office, this cozy, Michelin-starred French bistro is owned and operated by chef Daisy Ryan and her husband, Greg. With just ten tables and an open kitchen, Bell’s feels timeless—equal parts warm hospitality, impeccable wine list, and refined yet relaxed cuisine. It’s the standard we all aspire to in hospitality. 3. Bob’s Well Bread. Helped define Los Alamos as a culinary destination. Bob Oswaks’ artisan loaves rival those of Parisian bakeries, and the daily line out the door is a testament to his devotion to his craft. Don’t miss the country toast with housemade jam—or anything from the pastry case. 4. Pico at the Los Alamos General Store. Set inside the original 1880 general store, Pico honors the town’s history while championing a farm-to-table ethos. Everything—from charcuterie to condiments—is made in-house, using locally sourced vegetables, grains, and meats. Their carefully curated wine and spirits program focuses on small, sustainable producers. 5. Priedite BBQ at Bodega. A weekend pop-up worth planning around. Priedite serves smoked brisket, ribs, ranchero sausage, and pulled pork—all cooked low and slow over local oak—inside Bodega, a natural wine bar with a laid-back garden setting. 6. The Depot Bar. Inside the town’s Antique Mall lies this unpretentious local watering hole—the only spot in town open past 10 p.m. Expect live music, billiards, shuffleboard, and a cast of locals who play as seriously as they drink. It’s the perfect counterpoint to the town’s otherwise refined energy. 7. Wine Tasting in town. Lofi by Mike Roth. Clementine Carter by Sonja Magdevski. A Tribute to Grace by Angela Osborne. 8. Los Alamos Theatre Group. Founded in 2018, this community ensemble of actors, musicians, and designers stages original and classic works in true small-town spirit—collaborative, clever, and heartfelt. 9. 1880 Union Hotel. A must-see local landmark. Originally built as a Wells Fargo stagecoach stop in 1880, destroyed by fire in 1893, rebuilt in 1915, and restored decades later—the hotel now houses themed rooms, a saloon, and a collection of vintage memorabilia that transport you back in time. 10. Eye of the Day. Newly relocated from Carpinteria, is a standout. The shop specializes in European garden décor, including Italian terracotta urns, French Anduze pottery, and Greek planters, alongside statuary, fountains, and garden accessories that feel straight out of Provence. 11. A stroll down Bell Street reveals an array of vintage treasures and antique finds—records, books, décor, and garden curiosities abound.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When we purchased the building, our original idea was to expand the bistro and convert the current 22 rooms into 10 studio apartments with bathrooms and kitchens. Once we started the planning process, we quickly pivoted to reviving the original concept of a boutique hotel. The development process was excruciating. We had no money and no expertise in hotel renovations, so we made a lot of mistakes and shed a lot tears. It was my first real journey into interior design, and I quickly realized how much I loved it. Two years later we opened Granada Hotel & Bistro as the first downtown hotel in San Luis Obispo. Opening night was a milestone I will cherish for the rest of my life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When in... Marrakech - greatest hits</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Izza A newly renovated Riad with stunning design and small room count. An intimate and modern interpretation of the traditional riads with delicious food & drink. The General Manager- Karim, is fabulous. He’s a great resource for what’s happening in and around town. https://izza.com/ 2. El Fenn More hotel than riad. Restaurant, rooftop pool, spa, incredible shop, and very inspired design. It’s an Expat haunt but it’s a great starting point for a first night in a strange new land. Its location at the edge of the medina also makes it easy come and go from. The staff is uber friendly and accommodating. 3. Sahbi Sahbi A women run restaurant outside of the medina. Very new chic modern design. Delicious food. 4. Al Fassia All women run restaurant. An institution in Marrakech. 5. Nomad Modern Moroccan rooftop restaurant with views of Medina. Lunch here is a tradition. 6. La Mamounia. One of the ‘best hotels in the world’. Huge compound designed by Jacques Garcia and recently upgraded by Jouin Manku. People go to Marrakech, stay here, and never really leave the hotel. I don’t recommend staying here for that reason. BUT I do recommend going to The Churchill bar for a martini and caviar. 7. Yves Saint Laurent Museum A must visit. Filled with inspiration and beauty. The area surrounding the museum is also loaded with shops and cafes. 8. Majorelle Gardens feature over 130 species of plants cultivated from across the globe including cacti, water lilies, coconut trees, yuccas, and jasmine. 9. Hammam- A traditional bathhouse for soaking, massage and other treatments. Most riads have a modern version, less severe than the traditional (which I prefer because having your nipples scrubbed off hurts). 10 Medina- Officially listed in the UNESCO world heritage in 1985, the medina has an impressive number of masterpieces of architecture and art (monumental ramparts and doors, Koutoubia Mosque, Saadian tombs, ruins of the Badi palace, the Bahia palace and the Menara pavilion). All are recognized to have an outstanding universal value. 11. Norya Ayron Go here as a first stop and buy a Kafkan. You’ll wear it the entire time you’re in country. Her shop is in a very cute café for tea as well. 12. Soufaine Zarib This showroom can be challenging to find but worth the effort. Once inside, there are floors of stunning furniture, décor, rugs and art. It’s a well of inspiration and they ship worldwide. 13. Mustaphe Blaoui Big warehouse of vintage goods and rugs at the edge of the Medina. They ship worldwide. If you head there, ask for Khadija. Blaoui also has a concept shop in the new part of Marrakech that is very chic! You’ll need to taxi there. 14. Nomades de Marrakech Huge selection of quality rugs. There’s a lot of rugs throughout the medina that look great in the shops, but they deteriorate quickly. His rugs are high quality. Both vintage and new. He and his family are fabulous, and they ship worldwide. 15. LRNCE Ceramic mecca. They also have a new hotel that looks stunning, Rosemary. 16. V Barkowski Minimalist shop next to Mustaphe Blaoui. Housewares, linens, and bags.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - irma blanco - Irma: A Master of Mexican Folk Art</image:title>
<image:caption>Irma was very protective of her art and sold only out of her home and studio outside of the main town of Oaxaca. I was fortunate enough to visit her home while she was still alive and practicing her craft. She worked alongside her daughter, who has created her own style, a more modern interpretation than her mother’s. Irma's work gained international recognition and was included in Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art by Banamex. She participated in various exhibitions and fairs, including the Feria Maestros del Arte. Irma's dedication to her craft and her unique artistic vision have left a lasting legacy in the world of Mexican folk art.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Before & After: Skyview</image:title>
<image:caption>As time progressed, the Motel fell into disrepair and earned the local moniker "the Bates Motel" due to its eerie, abandoned appearance. That’s how I knew of it. We had been visiting Bell Street Farms, Bob’s Well Bread and Full of Life as a weekend ritual, as it’s only a 40-minute drive from SLO. We never thought to venture up the hill to see what the Motel was like. When we found out it was for sale, our eagerness to view it stemmed from joining the Los Alamos community. Once we walked through it, it was easy to see Skyview’s potential. The architecture, views, and location were all amazing. We spent the next two years undergoing an extensive renovation. We identified the important components to save (the sign, the architecture, the mid-century elements) and renovated everything else. We moved the parking in front of the rooms to an adjacent lot and created a relaxing gardenscape. We modernized the rooms, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and revitalized the 2-acre vineyard so we could have an estate grown rose to offer guests. The aesthetic choices were rooted in a blend of mid-century and modern cowboy culture as we felt those two directions were aligned with the region. We used a lot of color because color brings energy to a space and Los Alamos is brimming with creative energy and artistic flare. We designed custom beds, used brightly colored fabrics and patterns throughout the spaces, added hardwood floors, marble-clad bathrooms, and trough sinks. We curated the mini bars with locally sourced snacks. The bath amenities were created for Skyview by Fable Rune with nods to the garden elements found throughout the property. We created a poolside restaurant in what was originally the lobby and meeting space. As a nod to its former reputation, we named it ‘Norman’. It’s our take on a modern diner, serving California classics alongside a mix of stiff classics & poolside concoctions and a wine program celebrating the region's viticulture. We hope this chapter of Skyview is filled with happy guests using it as a base to explore Los Alamos and its inspiring collection of restaurants, vintage shops, and lounges. Then after a long day, they’ll find their way back via the massive MOTEL sign, enjoy a dip in the pool, a burger at Norman, and a good night’s sleep on the hill.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Before & after: Hotel Ynez</image:title>
<image:caption>The lobby building was the original owner’s family home, built in 1952. We painted the dark wood-paneled walls & ceilings white, opened the layout with arches adorned by reclaimed corbels, and added skylights and large picture windows to bathe the space in beautiful natural light. We used rich textures like worn leather, natural hardwood floors, and Moroccan textiles to add warmth to an otherwise bright aesthetic and surrounded the original fireplace with shelves filled with books, games, and an eclectic collection of treasures and artworks sourced from my travels. The 26 guest rooms are of similar design as the common areas. Sophisticated, relaxing and curated with original art and objects. Most have fireplaces. Some even have soaking tubs. Similar to Skyview, we moved the traditional motel guest parking to an adjacent parking lot and replaced the parking spaces with front yards for each hotel room, lined by limestone walls, and adorned by hand-woven Bolivian hammocks and picnic tables. Relaxation is the energy at the property. Ideally guests unwind amidst nature, with features like bonfire pits, a heated 21-and-over pool, and a rustic outdoor pavilion for starlit gatherings.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The bathrooms were the biggest challenge. The footprint was tiny, and showers were like capsules. Our challenge was to turn the worst element of the bathroom into its feature. We lined the shower walls with stunning zellige from Cle tile and used custom curved glass to replace the shower curtain. Outside of the cottages guests can enjoy numerous garden spaces with firepits, fountains and lounge seating throughout. Standing above the main garden is a vintage faux bois bird house I found in Oklahoma. All birds welcome.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Before & After: River Lodge</image:title>
<image:caption>This was my first attempt at creating a collection of bespoke furnishings throughout the property. For the exterior pathways and pool area, we sourced zellige tiles and created an assortment of shapes and patterns. We sourced original art and objects to adorn the common spaces throughout and enlisted Carol Paulson & Stephen Ploughman, the artists who created the fire tree for Granada Bistro, to creat awnings for the entrances into Ciao Papi, the poolside café. We debuted this new chapter of River Lodge in June 2024. The re-imagined Motel now features 28 stylish guest rooms with private patios, a vibrant courtyard with rose gardens, grassy lawns, fire pits, and a 21-and-over-only swimming pool and hot tub. An on-site Italian restaurant, Ciao Papi, offers a menu of signature pizzas, pasta, and craft cocktails, all served poolside.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - LO TING, HONG KONG - Between Land and Sea: The Myth of Lo Ting</image:title>
<image:caption>This mythological origin story of Hong Kong and its race of fish headed mermen is referenced dating back to the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). They had human bodies from the neck down, fish shaped heads, and a shiny carapace of scales down their backs that jutted into fish tails. They flitted between land and sea depending on which was safer at the time. In the 1990’s, Hong Kong artist, curator, and scholar Oscar Ho Hing Kay’s brought new light to the myth of Lo Ting, with his vision as the archetype of the western mermaid; its amphibian characteristics were a deliberate repudiation of the agrarian, rice-planting character of China’s Yangtze River civilization. Being “in-between,” Lo Ting was able to survive and roam between two different worlds, the embodiment of a typical Hong Konger. “I take myth very seriously as it often represents a culture and identity”. Says Ho Hing Kay “Our ancestors are from the sea, instead of from the land, denying the cultural linkage with China. The Lo Ting would be neither Western nor Chinese but indigenously, uniquely from Hong Kong.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - LO TING, HONG KONG</image:title>
<image:caption>Ho Hing Kay’s focus on Lo Ting was to encourage numerous depictions and fanciful creations so that no single person could claim ownership over the myth, so it could live on as a creation in constant evolution. “it’s a liberation from the tyranny of official history”. The Lo Ting was, in many ways, history, community, and identity all rolled into one human-fish hybrid. Later, the famous playwright Wong Kwok-Kui created a play using Lo Ting as a protagonist to revolve questions about Hong Kong’s identity. Wong’s plays reworked Hong Kong history through the eyes of Lo Ting. The fish man as a childlike creature, without strength or murderous impulses. Trusting and taught to speak by his rulers and then used by them for their own purposes. Lo Ting became so tired of human politics that he amputates his arms and legs to live as a fish once again until Victoria Harbor is dried up, forcing Lo Ting to return to human form for his own survival. The finale is a massacre, a stage full of fish headed Lo Ting with gun shots echoing through the air as they all fall to the ground.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - SUZANI - The Making of a Suzani</image:title>
<image:caption>Historically, suzani creation began with engaging the services of a master draftswoman called ‘kalamkash’ to create the pattern. Using silk or cotton threads, the artisan then embroidered the design onto the fabric, one stitch at a time. Original Suzanis were colored with vegetal dyes- indigo for blue, cochineal for red, saffron for yellow, a mix of indigo and a yellow tree fungus for green, and iron oxide and pistachio nuts for black. The dyeing process took place in an outdoor vat, like those that can still be seen today across the Maghreb.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - SUZANI - Suzani: Symbols and Revival</image:title>
<image:caption>Suzanis feature a wide range of motifs. Sun and moon disks symbolize the cosmic elements, while flowers like tulips, carnations, and irises represent the beauty of flora. Leaves and vines signify growth and vitality. Fruits, especially pomegranates, are also common, symbolizing fertility and abundance. Occasional depictions of fish and birds add to the diversity of the motifs, each carrying their symbolic connotations. In recent years, the world has seen a resurgence of interest in traditional crafts, and Suzani is no exception. Its vibrant colors, intricate designs, and unique cultural narratives have captivated a global audience. This has not only created a renewed demand for traditional Suzani textiles but also inspired modern interpretations of this ancient art form.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHEN IN… MARFA - greatest hits</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Dinner at Cochineal. One of my favorite restaurants, and always our first dinner in Marfa, is the tasting menu here. Executive Chef Alexandra Gates cooking is rooted in the creative use of the finest ingredients prepared and presented with thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Dishes are crafted with ingredients sourced from their on-site garden as well as from farmers, ranchers and others throughout Texas. 2. Marfa Spirits. Founded in 2018, the owners were originally drawn to Marfa because of the Sotol plants that grow wild throughout the Chihuahuan Desert. They explore a wide cross-section of the spirits world — Sotol, Mezcal, Tequila are the staples, but also rum made with molasses sourced from the last sugar cane mill in South Texas, high desert Gin, Brandy, Rio Grande Valley citrus liqueurs, and Far West Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey. 3. The Sentinel Home to The Big Bend Sentinel and Presidio International, The Sentinel is also a coffee shop, café, cocktail bar and curated retail space. Often we’ll start with a coffee and end up with a margarita. Its really a hub for all day imbibing and shopping the various local goods, art, and décor of West Texas. 4. Marfa Burrito I crave Marfa burrito. Walking into in takes me back to my Auntie Carmen’s kitchen. Homemade tortillas, eggs and cheese. Simply delicious. The walls are covered in graffiti, signatures from customers, photos of locals and celebrity customers (Matthew McConaughey, Mark Ruffalo), and shrines to Selena and Pancho Villa. 5. Garza Marfa. With Jamey’s background in fine arts and welding and Constance’s experience with textile and hues, the husband and wife team began to create together after relocating from the California coast to the high plains desert of Trans-Pecos in 2003. Influenced both by the materials and simplicity of living in the desert and their background of coastal living, the duo created the ultimate design & décor shop with handmade furnishings, ceramics, textiles and glassware. 6. Cactus Liquor. At Faith Gay and Joey Benton’s liquor store, you can buy a succulent and an incredible bottle of agave based spirits. good bottle of tequila. 7. Wrong Marfa. The name was the idea of artist Camp Bosworth, who, with his partner Buck Johnston, cofounded the store and gallery that’s guided by their idiosyncratic taste in handcrafted ceramics and jewelry as well as books and art. Incredibly curated by Buck and Camp Bosworth. Unique treasures and gorgeous jewelry. 8. Marfa Invitational's Sculpture Park champions exploration and innovation via the foundation's permanent collection of monumental outdoor works. 9. Chinati Foundation remains the cornerstone: more than 30 buildings host permanent works by 13 artists, in large minimal-art installations. 10. Ballroom Marfa, housed in a repurposed 1920s ballroom, is a non‐collecting contemporary art space that hosts rotating exhibitions, performances, film screenings, etc. Among my Souvenirs, Cobra Rock, Moonlight Gemstones, and so many other shops. Get on a bike and explore.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - KINTSUGI - There are three primary methods of kintsugi:</image:title>
<image:caption>Traditional Method: Broken pieces are carefully rejoined, with the cracks highlighted by fine lines of golden lacquer. Piece Method (Makienaoshi): A missing section is replaced entirely with gold lacquer, turning absence into a radiant feature. Joint-Call Method: A fragment from another vessel is fitted into the break, creating a striking contrast, like a puzzle piece from a different box.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - OMAR HERNANDEZ - A Living Tradition of Oaxacan Ceramics</image:title>
<image:caption>These categories echo the balance found in much of Mexican folk art, where beauty and utility coexist, and where handmade objects carry the spirit of place. Hernández’s reinterpretation of Oaxacan ceramics keeps this lineage alive — not as a static tradition, but as a living, evolving art form. “I like to work with colors that are found in nature,” he says. “Observing and getting inspired by nature — the texture of tree trunks and leaves.” He fires his pieces in both gas and wood ovens, using sgraffito (scratching designs into clay) or modeling natural elements directly into the surface. In some works, he presses leaves or stones into wet clay before firing, capturing fleeting textures in permanent form. The result is a body of work that feels both ancient and contemporary. His ceramics reference pre-Columbian forms yet reveal a minimalist sophistication rooted in material honesty and organic design. His famed mezcal copitas, textured with agave leaf impressions, have become emblematic within Oaxaca’s mezcal culture — a symbol of how everyday ritual and artistry intertwine. Hernández’s workshop sits on Oaxaca’s main thoroughfare. Visitors find not just ceramics for sale, but a hidden mezcalería tucked behind the studio — a fitting reflection of the artist’s world, where clay, culture, and community flow.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Housed in a conservation room built to museum standards, the archives contain over 25,000 documents, everything from tiny textile fragments to large-scale palace fabrics. The selection ranges widely: Indian silks, wood-block printed Toiles de Jouy, and even a reproduction of a 1775 Jaillot map of Paris, later reinterpreted as wallpaper. These archives are more than a design reference; they are a creative reservoir. Pierre Frey’s design teams draw directly from the archives to revive forgotten techniques, reimagine color palettes, and reinterpret historical patterns for the modern home. The archives also support institutional restorations, including collaborations with the Louvre, where Pierre Frey reproduced 18th-century silk for the museum’s decorative arts galleries.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When I visited the archives, I was guided by Sophie Rouart, who has managed them since their founding. Her passion for preservation and design was palpable. As she pulled open drawer after drawer of centuries-old fabrics, she spoke about how each textile tells a story — not only of its maker, but of the time and place from which it came. That experience reminded me that design is storytelling. In the world of Pierre Frey, the past is never past it’s woven into every new creation, thread by thread.</image:caption>
